That’s A Big Dish

When we were in New Mexico for the Winter, we visited the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array.
We were fortunate enough to be there when the radio antennas were being repositioned (https://science.nrao.edu/facilities/vla/proposing/configpropdeadlines).

The VLA was in the Jodie Foster movie, “Contact“.

Each antenna is 82 feet in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 22 miles(!) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 422 feet in diameter.

The antennas move very slowly. This short video was about 20-25 minutes in real time.

(Yes, I’m playing ‘catch up’ with videos we’ve shot)
